The mission of St. Matthew’s Health and Wellness Ministry / Parish Nurse Program is to promote an optimal level of health, wellness, and healing within the body, mind, and spirit of individuals of the congregation and the surrounding community. This is accomplished through supportive care, education, prayer, advocacy and referral.
The purpose of health and wellness ministry is to help the congregation care for one another…to help attain, maintain or regain the best possible whole person health of body, mind, and spirit.
THE ROLE OF THE PARISH NURSE
Personal Health Counselor
Addresses health issues with members and makes home, hospital, nursing home, or telephone visits as needed.
Referral Source / Advocacy
Uses knowledge of community services and agencies to help people access resources and referrals.

Through a variety of formats – classes, screenings, support groups, newsletters – the Parish Nurse provides education to promote self-care and to improve the understanding of the relationship between lifestyle, personal habits, attitudes, faith and wellness.
Coordinator of Groups and Volunteers
Recruits and coordinates volunteers within the congregation to carry out the Health and Wellness Ministries.
Relationship Builder Between Faith and Health and Healing
In all activities, provides a spiritual dimension of care and fosters an understanding that even in the presence of illness it is possible to experience a sense of healing and wholeness.
WHAT IS A PARISH NURSE?
The Parish Nurse is an experienced Registered Nurse who has additional training and education in Parish Nursing and is committed to the caring and healing ministry of the church.
The Parish Nurse works in partnership with the Pastor, Staff, Health and Wellness Team, other Caring Ministries and volunteers, who share their time and talents. The focus of this ministry is on health promotion, wellness and preventative care.
The Parish Nurse is not a substitute for pastoral care, medical care, community health nursing or social agencies, but rather works in partnership with these services. The Parish Nurse does not provide any hands-on-care and does not replace any health care service.
